The aims of Sheffield Chinese School (SCS) are to provide educational opportunities and promote Chinese culture.
DEVELOPMENT
The Chinese School was first established as a Chinese Language Class in 1973 by a group of parents for teaching their own children. These classes were held at various venues through out the city.
In 1982, The Sheffield and District Chinese School was officially formed, offering more classes at Myrtle Spring School. In 2001, the SCS moved to King Edward VII School.
We are now offering both Cantonese and Mandarin lessons.
Over the years, the school has received a lot of help and support from Sheffield city council, the Chinese community, friends and parents.
STRUCTURE
SCS is a sub-group of Sheffield Chinese Association, focusing mainly on cultural and educational issues.
The school is a Registered Charity under the name of Sheffield Chinese Association. All our activities are run by volunteers. The Headteacher, Deputy, Secretary and Treasurer are responsible for the school’s day to day administration. There are more than 20 teachers and 4 non-teaching staff. All are working on a voluntary basis.
PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN SCHOOL AND PARENTS
We understand the importance of partnership between school and parents. Parents are encouraged to make suggestions or raise any concerns to the class teachers or the Head. In addition, every parent has the opportunity to discuss and review their child(ren)’s learning progress during Parents’ Day.
CURRICULUM
The school classes range from Year 1 class for 4 years old, to GCSE Level. There is also a Special adult class for people who are interested in learning Chinese as a second language.
Currently, there are 200 pupils attending the school.
The combination of the teachers’ dedication and hard work, the input of parents and the determination of the pupils have proved extremely successful – with many students achieving excellent grades at GCSE level every year.
Extracurricular activities with a Chinese cultural theme, include chess, folk dance, dragon dance, lion dance, Mandarin class, calligraphy and Chinese musical instrument tuitions are very popular amongst our pupils.
ACTIVITIES
The school takes an active part in the Annual Chinese New Year Celebrations organised by the Sheffield Chinese Association. We are also involved in other cultural activities locally and nationally.
Summer trips are organised for pupils and their families to destinations in this country as well as abroad.
FUNDING
The School is mainly funded by parents’ contribution and the Education Grant Aid provided by Sheffield City Council. We are also sponsored by some individuals and organisations.
